The Mayor of Christ Mountain

A novel in progress

April 13, 2018 An unexpected gift

When Carrie Smalls came into her office that day, she found a plain brown cardboard box addressed to her (with no return address) sitting on her desk. It was maybe an eight inch cube.

She hadn’t ordered anything, or at least not anything to be delivered to her at work.

Mystified, she pulled out a pair of scissors and sliced open the tape on top of the box. Opening it, she pulled out quite a bit of packing material and found inside a small glass house. Pulling it out, she examined it from all angles. As she turned it, Carrie heard a rattling noise, and looking closer, saw a rock inside.

That day, she asked everyone around the office, but no one claimed it and no one knew what it meant or why it had been sent to her. In the end, she left it parked on the corner of her desk for the moment.

All that weekend, that little glass house would occasionally pop into her thoughts, and she would puzzle over it a moment before moving on to whatever else she was occupied with.
